Tactics of Sevens

The game of seven-a-side Rugby has grown in popularity in recent years with a number of international tournaments being staged, including the prestigious HSBC Sevens World Series. It has also recently been included as an Olympic sport for the Games being held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

So Sevens is growing in popularity around the world and many coaches are looking for training ideas and help.

Literature on Sevens Rugby is surprisingly scarce. The top coaches are busy people involved directly in national team coaching and do not have the time to write books on tactics and training. It is hoped that the information on this website will help coaches develop players and teams in Sevens Rugby.

Whether Sevens is used for developing talent for the national team or to popularise Rugby in Unions where it is little known as a sport, its potential can only be enhanced by informed and structured coaching.

The IRB has produced accreditation courses for Sevens for both coaches and match officials:

  • Coaching Rugby Sevens (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3)
  • Officiating Rugby Sevens (Level 1, Level 2)
