It is advisable to ring the school a day or two before you start to introduce yourself and to confirm your arrival time
Arrive extra early on the day you are to start – allow 30 minutes, so you can meet the head teacher and ensure you know and understand the following points:
School behaviour policy and rewards system
Procedures - registering &and dismissing children, children going to the toilet in lessons, getting drinks, etc
Staff toilets, etc
Sports equipment – where is it stored, who has key, etc
First aid procedures
If doing an after school club – who will be on site? Where do parents collect from? Parents should sign when they collect children
Arrive at the school at least 20 minutes before the lesson/session starts. It is important you sort out what school equipment you are going to use beforehand. Check with teachers if there are any issues that day with any of the children.
You should be Mr Smith not John; at least to start with, as this will help you have authority. “Coach” is acceptable but beware of letting children use your first name.
Be calm, friendly but firm. Treat the children with quiet authority. Ask them to get changed quietly (do not tell them), but do so in a firm way. It is easier to become more relaxed with children after being firm, rather than the other way around.
Be aware of children with special needs. You should be told who requires special attention by the staff at the school. There may be an adult who will support children with special needs in your sessions. You may need to adapt your plan slightly so that child has an achievable target. Have patience with special needs children. Some other children may be good at helping them - you might pair them up. If in doubt, talk to the class teacher who will know what would be appropriate.
Make sure any equipment you use is put back neatly in the equipment store.
Enjoy your work! There is nothing better than working with children - they are so enthusiastic and keen to do well that you cannot fail to enjoy teaching them. You will be greeted with huge smiles every time you arrive at the school!
